Phil Newbery. (Vocals & Guitar)
Musical History Phil started his career in music around the age of 9 when he got his first instrument (a 12" Casio keyboard). From there he thought he needed something bigger, so he bought a guitar. After learning the staple songs of a musician (Wild Thing, House Of The Rising Sun), he was ready to form his first band, at the age of about 13. In the years that followed, he played anywhere from local pubs to eventually playing London's 'Mean Fiddler'. What more could a boy achieve? At 17 he thought he'd reached the pinnacle of his career. That was until the day he met Andy Parker. He met Andy whilst working in a record store and the two of them hit it off with a shared passion for music. Andy was working on some new songs and needed a singer. Phil was without a band at that time and Andy asked him to sing on some demos. After listening to Andy's demos, he was hooked and Andy soon became 'Mr. Miyagi' to Phil's 'Daniel-san'. Under his guidance Phil learned to hone his craft, learning the Parker family secret, passed down from generation to generation, of the magic formula of songwriting: Verse-verse-chorus-verse-chorus-mid 8-double chorus-out (don't tell anyone!). The two of them spent the next few months writing together and recorded a demo that would become the seed of State Of Grace. After recruiting Mark Lawson and Johnny Tempest from an ad in the local paper, the line-up was complete. This line-up lasted a while until Mark left and Johnny felt the need to move to Leicester (who knows why). When Johnny returned, Phil moved to Nottingham were he currently resides. When State Of Grace regrouped, Phil's brother Steve filled the position of bass guitarist. Now they are fully functioning again, still pushing for their dream. Will they succeed? That's up to you.... Personal History
Phil Newbery was born in Cuckfield, Sussex. Phil has always led a charmed life, the sort of person who loses a penny and finds a pound. Being a positive person, Phil knew that he didn't have the ingrediants most successful songwriters had: desperation, knowing what it was like to be deprived or abused in some way. He thought that this was what he needed to give depth and meaning to his songwriting. Not until later in life did he appreciate that his desperation lies in not wanting to just exist and settle for less than success. With influences from "The Police" to "Live", his songwriting incorporates the pop and melodic tunes mixed with a spiritual and philosophical backdrop.
